A “suitable
person” is
defined as A person who holds a Health and Safety Executive HSE
approved (4-day) First Aid at Work Course Certificate.
An adequate and appropriate number of “Suitable
Persons” must
be provided to render first aid treatment at work. Deciding what
is adequate and appropriate numbers should be based on your
risk assessments, which should identify a number of issues including
the number of employees, the layout of your site, the remotness
of your site, the materials used on site and many more

The competencies addressed in this HSE Approved
course, which is approved by the HSE, include:
- Dealing
with emergencies at work.
- Administering
cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
- Administering First Aid to unconscious
casualties.
- Administering First Aid to bleeding
or wounded casualties
- Administering First Aid for: burns and
scalds; bones, muscles or joint injuries; shock; eye injuries;
poisoning; casualties overcome by gas fumes
- Safe transport of casualties
- Recognition of, and appropriate procedures
for dealing with common illnesses
- Competent record keeping and effective
commmunication of information to doctor.
